Concrete steps are built using concrete mix and a few other simple tools. This can also be an easy do-it-yourself kind of project. Concrete steps are durable and attractive and blend easily with the surrounding landscape. The concrete mix can be purchased from any concrete supplier in ready condition or can be prepared at the site of construction. Concrete steps are constructed with the help of wooden forms.

Important considerations for concrete step construction

The height of the raiser and the depth of the tread are important aspects to be considered before the construction of concrete steps. The step use is the factor that affects the construction parameters. There is a distinct ratio for the raiser and tread measurements, which can be sought from any concrete contractor or reference manual. It is important to keep in mind that the raisers and treads must be uniform in any given flight of stairs.

Concrete step construction

The base is first prepared for laying the concrete steps. The area to be covered with steps is cleared of dirt, stones and any other matter and is dug to a depth of about 6 inches. It is leveled and tamped and the forms are built on this surface. The forms are made of wood which can be easily pulled out once the concrete used becomes dry. The shape and structure of the forms will determine the design of the concrete that is poured into the forms. The surface is screeded and a float or darby used to level the surface area. Edgers and trowels are also used to finish the concrete. The concrete must cure for at least 24 hours before the supporting forms are removed. After the concrete is hard enough for use, it may be decorated according to the homeowner’s wishes.

An alternative to concrete steps

Concrete ramps are an alternative to concrete steps. However they are more beneficial if there is only a slight change in elevation. They can prove to be useful in case wheelbarrows, lawn mowers and other such equipment are used frequently. The only important thing to remember is the slope of the ramp which must meet certain construction specifications.

Although concrete blocks and concrete structures have been in use over a hundred years, concrete masonry has taken an altogether new form in the recent years because of the wide variety of shapes, colors, textures and sizes of not just concrete blocks but entire concrete structures as well.

Where is concrete masonry used?

Concrete masonry is used in wide variety of structures. From residential to commercial buildings, roadways to bridges, landscape projects to enormous dams, every constructed building is the work of concrete masonry at its best. Qualified professionals or concrete contractors, engineers, architectural designers and homeowners alike have experimented with the versatility of concrete masonry for various purposes. The artistic flexibility offered by concrete masonry has led to the construction of many strikingly beautiful and aesthetically superior buildings which are used for various purposes in all parts of the world.

Concrete masonry at work

Concrete is mainly a mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water. It may contain other aggregates according to its use in the construction of any structure. The materials required to prepare concrete are mixed together in certain ratios. Certain other reinforcements in the form of formwork and steel may be needed to build concrete structures. The concrete is poured into the forms and the surface is then worked smooth. Finishing may be done in a variety of textures and designs using paper or adhesive stencils. The concrete is then left to cure for a particular number of days depending upon the structure and the strength required. The curing process may last from a couple of days to approximately a month.

Safety measures when handling concrete masonry

The first step towards handling masonry is to know that masonry can be quite heavy. Hence it is necessary to make use of wheelbarrows or other such device for transporting material from one place to another. Lifting masonry physically may cause injuries to the back. Concrete masonry material may also cause damage to the eyes due to concrete dust. Safety goggles are recommended along with gloves and clothing with long sleeves for protection of hands and arms when working with concrete masonry.

Concrete panels or large concrete surfaces may require support in the form of concrete angles. When the entire structure is made of concrete, using angles made from other materials may not be a designer’s choice of work. Concrete angles are made from steel reinforced precast concrete with added additives for providing the extra strength and durability required.

Concrete angle designs

While concrete angles are meant for the specific purpose of holding concrete panels and giving them the required support, visibility of the concrete angles has brought innovative designs for added aesthetic appeal to the concrete panels and angles. Arches and traditional designs are favored by most designers and builders. The ancient Roman, Greek and other designer columns and angles are the places where concrete angle designs are sourced from.

Polishing machine for concrete angles

Concrete manufacturers and suppliers also supply polishing machines that are designed for grinding and polishing the angles on large concrete panels. The concrete angles may be polished by mounting them on these special machines or can be held in place with the spindle like blades working on the entire length of the profile. Polishing provides a distinct look to the curved surface of the concrete angles and brings it into ready to use condition. This is again done only by qualified professionals who have special equipment that may be costly. In simple words, therefore, homeowners are not recommended the purchase and use of such polishing machines.

Resources for concrete angles

Most concrete contractors would know where to locate a concrete angle manufacturer or supplier. Since special equipment is required for both preparing, polishing and finishing the concrete angles, concrete manufacturing companies that specialize in this kind of work are highly preferred. Recreational areas, commercial or residential structures, business centers and even those places that have traditionally designed construction require the use of concrete angles on a larger scale than other forms of construction. Many concrete angle installation contractors can be located from the various websites on the Internet that provide detailed information regarding the kind of activity and the hire charges for their services.

Pre-casting concrete is an ancient concept. However with the development in the technology of construction, the technique developed for precast concrete is fairly modern, since it never existed before the 20th century. This is a technique where the concrete is put into structural containers before it is actually brought on the site. The prime motive behind this development was to increase its strength and durability. Also this saves time and expense of the construction. For these reasons precast concrete is becoming more and more popular in the construction business.

What exactly is pre-casting?

Firstly, the concrete needs to follow a particular process in order reach the construction site in its best form. Thus, it is cast into reusable molds or structures. These molds are then brought into a controlled environment for curing. This cured concrete is what is known perhaps as ‘ready to use’. This ready to use concrete is taken to the site and elevated into the place.

In the ancient times, this method was followed but they were devoid of any modern progress. But the basic process of casting the concrete into molds has remained the same.

Uses:

In the olden days the concrete was used by the ancient Romans to build their complex building, which consisted of very complex networking of concrete tunnels and passages. Today with the growth in the precast technology, it is being used in a range of places. Some examples are freestanding walls, landscapes, water tunnels, etc.

Types:

There are different types of precast concretes. The basic method of processing this concrete remains the same, but they vary on different grounds. They are different in texture and size. They also vary a certain extent in their function. This variation in the function is due to the variation in texture and size. They also vary in their cost.

Today there are many companies producing precast concrete. All these companies ensure long-lasting sustenance of the products since there is less or almost negligible likeliness of decay or damage. You can easily look out for the companies and costs and also for the process of order placements online since there are innumerable sites present that give you the information about the same.

Concrete removal is required when the concrete surfaces are beyond repair or patching. Trying to fix concrete that is beyond repair will only result in loss of time and money and will make the final dcor look dirty and shoddy. Concrete removal may be carried out for a number of reasons.

When is concrete removal required?

Concrete removal may be required when deep cracks occur in existing concrete. Concrete slabs that have sunk in over a period of time are also best replaced. Very cold climates also cause concrete slabs to heave because of frost. At times, an addition may be made to a construction or building after a number of years. Concrete that is an obstacle in this kind of project may need to be removed. Faculty concrete construction may be another reason for concrete removal too. Street widening, roadways repairs may also require concrete to be removed, replaced or reconstructed.

Techniques used in concrete removal

Concrete demolition and removal processes use techniques such as pneumatic and hydraulic breakers for breaking down pavements, foundations and even bridge decks. Cutting of concrete structures and then removing them using cranes, known as dismantling is another effective way of concrete removal. Water jetting helps minimize dust and eliminates fire hazards. Large structures may be demolished using explosives although this is not a highly recommended technique for concrete demolition and removal. Concrete demolition and removal contractors are hired for such jobs which should never be considered as a do-it-yourself kind of project.

Safety measures while removing concrete

Using shovels for concrete removal may be the construction tool used by most concrete removal contractors or workers but may result in injuries to the back if not used properly. A few clothing and special equipment are also advised when handling concrete removal. Loose clothing is not recommended. Safety goggles and face-masks that will prevent dust inhalation and heavy gloves and appropriate shoes or boots are also to be included in the protective gear to be used by workers and contractors. Homeowners who may be supervising the work are also recommended the use of such protective gear.

Concrete in House Construction- The Pros

Concrete homes combine style with strength and flexibility. Concrete also provides natural soundproofing and everlasting strength. Solid concrete homes are more airtight than the wooden construction, thus reducing air drafts in the home. Concrete is heat absorbing and levels the temperature changes. This keeps the house warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Concrete homes also call for less repair and maintenance. They are safe from dry rot, termites and pests. Concrete homes are environment friendly, as they considerable reduce deforestation. They are also one-time investments. Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) is commonly used in building construction. Building houses with ICF comes with advantages such as fire resistance, energy saving and excellent structural strength. There are around 30 brands of ICF available in North America. ICF homes offer design flexibility as they can be completed with any interior or exterior finishings. Concrete homes are resistant to structural stresses such as earthquakes. They are also resistant to rot, pests and termites. The total construction cost of concrete homes is less due to low labor requirement. ICF walls construction is only slightly more than that of wooden frames. Concrete homes are significantly cost effective.

Cons of Concrete Homes

The disadvantages of concrete construction include excess time for construction and more risk of leakage, which require more costly repairs. Humidity is more likely to develop in such constructions. It also takes more time to heat up. Concrete homes are tougher to remodel than normal constructions.
But, all in all, the advantages of concrete homes far outweigh the disadvantages. Concrete homes are, thus very feasible and widely used options. Concrete homes are an excellent investment in terms of safety and value.

A public park, outdoor restaurant and schools are incomplete without the presence of concrete tables. Those strong and decorative structures meant for rough use throughout the year are known to add volumes to the beauty of the landscape while serving the purpose of accommodating picnics, get-togethers or simply youngsters in school at their lunch or play.

What are concrete tables made of?

Concrete tables are made of precast concrete cast into different molds and then finished and polished for a smooth and ready to use surface. The table surfaces are given a quality concrete coating that is able to provide maximum protection against weather and daily use. Most of the tables are designed for outdoor commercial use and have precast table bases and legs which can be easily assembled by the supplier either on site or at his workshop. Long lasting and virtually maintenance free, concrete tables are available in different designs and styles, some even with seating arrangement in the form of concrete benches along with it.

Concrete table designs

Concrete tables come in various shapes and designs. Restaurant style concrete tables with a round or oval table top are very popular. These are also used in schools or picnic areas. Designer concrete tables are also available with separate or attached concrete benches that complement the table design. Some manufacturers have also come up with a designer concrete table that allows wheelchair access or even high chair access on one side. If this is not required, the table can be placed against a wall to create more space. These tables can also be used as an outdoor table for the backyard or patio at home.

Where to locate a concrete table supplier?

Concrete table manufacturers and suppliers are listed in most area directories or yellow pages. Landscape designers and architects would also be great sources of information for such suppliers. The Internet has numerous websites put up by such suppliers and manufacturers. Their websites also give one an idea of how the end product would look like. Although custom designs may not be possible, some suppliers do give a choice of three or four colors to suit customer choices.

A concrete overlay is simply a method of resurfacing an existing concrete to cover cracks, imperfections or simply to turn a dull and boring concrete floor in to an attractive one. There are various types of overlays available and also a number of decorative options to choose from.

How is concrete overlay prepared?

Earlier, a concrete floor was given a cement-based overlay to give it an improved look. Today, most concrete overlays consist of a blend of polymer resins, which also include cement, sand and any other material that may increase the resistance or improve the quality of the overlay. Layers of such overlays can be laid; the thickness of each would depend upon the homeowner as well as the designer.

Advantages of concrete overlays

If an existing concrete slab or part of the floor has broken down and needs to be repaired or replaced, it can become a cumbersome task and could lead to further damage. It could further add to costs and may also turn out to be quite a messy task. The better way out is to opt for concrete overlay, which could give not just the floor, but the entire home a decorative makeover at a much lesser cost and span of time. One could add patterns, textures, and even use colorful designs to enhance the look.

Types of overlays

Overlays are available in many forms. These include stampable overlays that give the benefits of stamped concrete but take up lesser time to install. Micro toppings and skim coats are the next type of overlays, which are somewhat similar to decorative toppings and are applied in thin layers to beautify the space using colors. Spray-down systems involve spraying concrete with an air-powered gun and use of a trowel to smoothen the concrete. Stencils or paper may be used to create attractive floor designs. A self-leveling overlay is a method where concrete material is poured on to the surface and allowed to settle down on its own. Decoration can be incorporated or this may be used as a preceding layer to tiles, carpets or any other form of floor coverings.

Concrete cutting involves controlled cutting or sawing and removal of concrete using special equipment such as saws with diamond impregnated blades and performed by skilled and professional concrete cutting contractors. Concrete cutting is mainly divided into three kinds of activities such as wall sawing, core drilling and slab sawing.

Wall sawing

Wall sawing is a process of cutting concrete for creating openings such as doors or windows or even creating passages between basement rooms. A huge 30″ saw may be used to cut into concrete that can measure between 12″ and 24″ in thickness. This task is best accomplished by professional concrete cutting contractors who can cut perfectly and create level openings with precision. It is highly recommended that any wall sawing activity be carried out at the time of construction itself as this may cause less damage to the existing walls.

Core drilling

At times, the design or renovation process of any home or building may involve the requirement of perfectly round holes in the already constructed walls. Core drilling is the process of cutting concrete to achieve the same. Core holes are mostly used for utility applications such as electrical, heating and plumbing wires or ducts and pipes. Core drilling is also required for creating fireplace vents or vents for clothes dryers. Here also, hiring a professional concrete cutter will make the job easier and less messy.

Slab sawing

Repairs to underground water pipes or sewer lines or filling up of cracked driveways or patios may require a certain part or slab to be cut away. This is done using a method called as slab sawing or flat sawing where horizontal cuts or openings are made in the concrete floor. If there are changes to be made in the exterior landscape of a house, a homeowner may again want certain portions of concrete removed from the existing patio or walkway. Slab sawing may also be required when basements are remodeled to include bathrooms. It is again recommended that professional concrete cutters who can complete such tasks expertly using less time and equipment and at the same time do not create a mess should carry out slab sawing.

Concrete countertops provide one more option to make the kitchen looker classier and clean. As good as stone, tiles or even wood, they provide all the benefits of durability, versatility and attractive style and design all in one place. They are available in different sizes, designs and colors and can also be custom-made or stained as per the homeowner’s choice.

How are concrete countertops made?

Concrete countertops can either be pre-cast in a shop or can be made to order at the place of installation. When using the method of pre-cast, special casting tables are used by contractors to get the required shape, size and color. When the contractor makes a countertop at site, it is more to meet with the design and functional requirements of the client’s kitchen. Most countertops are made from cement, lightweight aggregates and additives such as fiber reinforcement, acrylic, etc. They are cured and ground to give a look of beauty and durability. Coatings of sealers are always used on them to improve the quality and reduce maintenance efforts.

Concrete countertop costs

The costs involved in getting a concrete countertop would include the making charges of the contractor, the cost of the materials used and if it has been pre-cast, additional shipping charges must also be taken into account. Besides, the installation charges also form a part of the costs. Since most concrete countertops are custom made, they tend to be priced higher than those made from other materials. In simple words, they are not low budget.

Features

Although concrete countertops have numerous advantages, they also have certain limitations. It is important to note that they may not be used for chopping or cutting vegetables as this may damage the sealer. Also, avoid placing hot pans directly on the countertop as this may again damage the sealer by discoloring it or wearing away its water-resistant capacity. Most countertops are pre-cast. Hence they are available in standard kitchen counter top sizes. If they are custom-made, the homeowner can decide on the sizes and the contractor can make them accordingly. Seams may be used to give a marble or shiny look to the extended counter top.

It is generally observed that high traffic areas in the exterior of a house may become bare and muddy due to constant use. It is not possible to grow grass at such spots. What is possible is to pour a concrete pad to stop the mud and make it look more decorative than before.

Tools and materials required

Tools such as a shovel, hammer, level, a wheelbarrow, an edging and grooving tool are the basic equipments required. Other gardening tools may also prove to be useful. Materials required to prepare the concrete include concrete, gravel, a mason’s cord, some fine sand, forming boards and some concrete sealer.

Selecting the right type of concrete mix

The right kind of concrete mix and the right quantity must be selected for the concrete pad. The options available include:

* The regular concrete mix which is a mixture of sand, gravel and Portland cement.
* The high early strength concrete mix which includes certain additives that shorten the setup time required for concrete. This form of concrete is highly recommended for the concrete pad.
* The fiber-reinforced mixes that includes the regular mix along with synthetic fibers that add strength to the concrete.

Preparing the site for pouring the concrete pad

The form needs to be set in place to prepare for the concrete pour. The forming boards should be set up accordingly and wire mesh may be included if fiber-reinforced concrete is to be used. The concrete is then prepared and the insides of the forming boards are coated with cooking oil. The wet concrete is then filled into the form. The concrete is spread evenly and is given a smooth surface finish. Edging and grooving are the next steps for the pad construction. The pad is then surfaced.

The final touch for the concrete pad

The final steps include curing and sealing the pad. This will add more strength and life to the concrete. The pad is first covered with plastic and left for forty-eight hours to prevent it from flash drying. At the end of forty-eight hours, the pad may be uncovered and left to cure as per the concrete manufacturer’s instructions. Once the curing process is complete, a good concrete sealer may be applied to it.

Concrete planters are simply what one would call as giant flower pots. These planters are meant for holding plants just like normal flower pots. But they are also designed with another important aspect in mind, that of providing security to the building or home whose entrance they are placed. These concrete planters provide security by creating an entrance barrier to those who may wish to harm the security of the occupants. Concrete planters may be purchased from concrete planter manufacturers in readymade condition or may be custom-made for installation at business centers or big commercial buildings.

Features of concrete planters

Most concrete planters are pre-cast and ready manufactured. At times, they may also be custom-made for big business centers. Available in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and designs, these concrete planters not only add to the aesthetic appeal of the exterior dcor but also give that extra-secured feeling to the people occupying the residential or commercial building. They are low on maintenance and generally durable to a great extent.

Where are concrete planters used?

Concrete planters are ideal for hotels, restaurants, business centers and shopping centers. They are typically used as beautiful additions to the home and garden surroundings and are found in both residential as well as commercial buildings. Concrete planters may be integrated in the architectural design of a new construction or may be added to the building site at a later stage. These concrete planters are also used in front of important business centers or office for regulating foot traffic as well as being able to take care of other security concerns such as attacks and threats. The huge size of these planters makes it impossible for any vehicle to come into the vicinity of the buildings.

Where to look for a concrete planter?

Concrete planter manufacturers can be located from any local area directory or the yellow pages. Home building associations may also be able to provide information about such suppliers or manufacturers. The Internet also has many websites put up by such manufacturers and suppliers, through which they can be contacted. These websites allow the buyer to take a look at concrete planter shapes, sizes and designs and the prices at which they are available.

As the demand for decorative work has increased in landscaping, designers and contractors have found new techniques. Unlike the outdated slab work, concrete landscaping has brought creativity to the forefront because of its fluidity, endless possibilities in color and shading and longevity. The word concrete invokes such mental images that it may not be something you’d want in your yard.

However, landscaping experts have begun to incorporate concrete materials in their designs the past few years with amazing results. Use of concrete is growing with the introduction of stained concrete finishes to include patios and driveways as well and concrete can be used for various parts of your yard.

Uses of concrete in landscaping:

The most common use of concrete in landscaping is concrete block designs for walkways and paths through the garden. This is usually seen in larger yards but can be accommodated even in smaller yards. It could be a small patio built from concrete blocks for seating or it could be a simple concrete planter or two for a small container garden. Or it could simply be a concrete sundial in a flower bed. Another upcoming form of concrete landscaping is stone walls. Walls frame the whole home like a frame covers a prized painting. There are various reasons to have concrete walls. Concrete walls work well for keeping small pets in the yard and keeping intruders out. The burglars will also not bother trying to get in your home. Concrete landscaping can also be used to keep your soil in place. If a part of your yard is on an incline then you can build a retaining wall especially for this purpose. Concrete blocks come in many shapes and textures and styles.

Concrete is so suited to landscaping because while it can be quite functional and rugged it also can give the appearance of being purely decorative. You can do so much with concrete in landscaping because it is quite easy to work with. You can use concrete landscaping bricks, blocks or whole solid slabs for concrete landscaping. You can even get custom made concrete landscaping stones that are unique in color, shape and pattern. By visiting your local nursery or landscaping supply stores and having a look at the concrete landscaping materials, you can surely get some ideas for your next backyard project.

Concrete benches are also made using concrete. Most of the concrete benches are precast and only need to be assembled at the site.

Concrete bench designs

Most concrete benches are made of steel reinforced concrete that has the ability to withstand the rough exteriors and the elements of weather. Mostly available in standard sizes, they are best meant to be used in places such as parks and gardens. The concrete is available with or without color stains or can be custom design to suit the requirements of the purchaser. Concrete park benches are also available without back slats. These kind of benches look exceptionally good in large gardens and parks.

Precast concrete bench ends

Precast concrete bench ends are suitable for most outdoor seating arrangements. Used widely in parks and gardens or even roadside seating, these concrete ends are available with the required number of inserts for attaching the seat and the back slats. The seat and the back slats may be made out of a variety of materials such as wood, plastic or even metal. Fasteners are used to secure them to the bench ends. The benches are usually assembled at the site or location of the park or garden. These precast concrete bench ends are also available in a variety of designs and colors with most concrete bench manufacturers and suppliers.

Locating a concrete bench supplier

The Internet can provide information on concrete bench suppliers. It also has a vast number of websites that give designers and purchases the opportunity to take a look at the designs and colors available. Comparative prices also make it easier to make a buying decision. Area building associations, architects and landscape contractors are other sources of information for locating a concrete bench supplier or manufacturer.

Concrete sealers are used to seal gaps and leaks on concrete pavements, driveways, patios or even concrete counter tops in the kitchen. Made from synthetic epoxy resins, these sealers seal the gaps and probable leak areas and make the surface water-resistant and prevent water from penetrating into the concrete. Cracks and gaps that may allow moisture to seep in can be filled in using sealers.

Where are concrete sealers used?

Concrete countertops need water-resisting ability, which can be provided by using concrete sealers. They make the countertop quality superior and at the same time act as a waterproofing agent. Applied when the countertop is pre-cast or custom-made at site, two or three coats of a good concrete sealer will take care of all gaps and leaks and add a shiny touch to the kitchen work area. Concrete sealers are also used on pavements, driveways, patios and anything else that have concrete for a surface or work area. Sealers make them water-resistant and also reduce maintenance costs later on by providing

Why sealing is important?

Concrete sealing can prove to be beneficial in many ways. If used on driveways, it becomes easier to remove snow and ice from the path. Sealers strengthen the concrete surface whether on a kitchen counter top or a patio. Stains and spills that can leave behind ugly marks can be done away with sealers. Another important feature is that sealers help easy clean up.

Other advantages of sealers

Concrete sealers can also reduce the effort and energy put in to maintenance of concrete driveways or patios or even counter tops in kitchens. Although two or three sealer coatings may take up to a week for application, the final result that it can bring along with only a liquid wax shine or other simple clean up methods, sealers make it possible to give maintenance checks over a greater period of time. Wet basements can be another problem area. Sealers can seal gaps and cracks in the walls and joints and stop water leakage. This will stop moisture condensation and reduce mold and bad odors in basements.

Chemical stains applied to new, old or remodeled concrete or construction is called as concrete stain. Containing metallic salts which react with the concrete and becoming a permanent part of the concrete, concrete stain is also known as acid stain. Black, brown and blue-green are the color groups that are manufactured by most concrete stain manufacturing companies.

When is stain applied?

Many contractors are of the opinion that stain should be applied immediately after the concrete is placed. This will give the stain a richer and more intense color. There are other contractors who advise that the concrete should cure for a period of ten to twenty-five days before stain can be applied to the concrete. But it is definitely advisable to finish the staining, sealing and the covering of finished work before the contractors move on. This will save time on cleanup and can also take care of damage repair while the construction is in progress.

How is concrete stain applied?

Concrete stains can be applied either using a sprayer or using a paintbrush. Although sprayers are used for the application of stains, care must be taken that the sprayers do not contain any metal parts and also rated low on acids. This is because the acids may affect the metal which in turn will affect the final color of the stain. Using a paintbrush can solve this problem. However it is important to take care that brush marks do not become too visible.

Factors that determine the final color of concrete stain

Besides the application of stain on concrete just after it is laid or after a certain number of days, there are other factors that play an important role in determining the final outcome of stain application. These could include the concrete used, its properties and its finishing quality, the weather conditions at the time of applying the stain and the concrete age and moisture content at the time of application.

Other equipment for applying stains

Some contractors may use a grinder or a buffing machine equipped with sanding pads. Power-washing equipment can also be put to good use when applying stain. Workers need to make use of proper safety equipment such as gloves, boots, goggles and facemasks. Equipment also needs to be acid-resistant. For a good cleanup after stain application, wet vacuums are highly recommended.

Any good construction involves a strong foundation, which supports the structure. Since the foundation is the first thing to be constructed, the quality and material used in the foundation must be at a superior level. Concrete contractors and construction engineers are best equipped to construct concrete foundations and make them strong and secure for the building structure that will be developed over it. This could range from a single storied house to several miles of roadways or even high-rise buildings and dams.

Types of concrete foundation

There are mainly two types of concrete foundations. They are concrete block foundations and poured concrete foundations. Concrete block foundations consist of foam blocks stacked into place and filled with concrete while poured concrete foundations involve the use of wooden or aluminum forms that are set up in place before concrete is poured into them. It is also advisable to use reinforcing material such as steel to strengthen the foundation structure as it increases the overall strength of both types of concrete foundations.

Problems that occur in concrete foundations

The major problem faced by both homeowners and construction and concrete contractors is the occurrence of cracks in the concrete foundation. It is generally observed that concrete foundations tend to crack within a year of installation. This could be due to reasons such as shrinkage or settling of the concrete foundation. Waterproofing plays a major role in preventing damage from cracks. Protection is of utmost importance because a concrete foundation can only be worked upon at the start of the construction and cannot be redone later. Sealers can also provide protection from wetness and sagging.

Curing for poured concrete foundations

Any type of concrete foundation requires up to seven days of curing time. However it may take up to sixty days for the foundation to reach its full strength. The lesser the moisture around the foundation, the faster is the curing process. Hence all possibilities of waterproofing and removing water that can collect around the foundation must be looked into and acted upon as quickly as possible. It is better to avoid any kind of concrete pouring during heavy rain.

Concrete is a composite material used commonly in building construction. It consists of a combination of an aggregate and a cement binder. The most common type of cement comprises of Portland cement, mineral aggregates and water. Concrete is the most widely used man-made material on earth. Concrete has high compressive strength, but comparatively lower tensile strength.

Brighten up your Concrete Home

Concrete can be colored according to individual tastes to impart a livelier look to the house. Coloring of concrete considerably improves the appearance of the concrete walls and also adds strength to the concrete structures. The colors can be used in various combinations and the concrete can be given various interesting finishing touches. It can be given a broom finish, a swirl or fan pattern. Sandblasting also creates a dramatic look.

There are generally two types of colored concrete. Integrally colored concrete involves the coloring of the entire batch of concrete, either at the site or with color bags. Integral coloring can be done in earthy tones and pastel shades. The colorant can be added in liquid or powder form. Dry Shake colored concrete involves the use of brighter and unusual colors. Color hardeners are often used in this technique. This method increases the durability and abrasion resistance of the concrete. The entire batch of concrete is not colored; rather, the color is concentrated on the surface. Coloring of concrete can be effectively used to visually break up large areas of concrete. Multiple colors can be used side by side to create excellent effects. Ready-mix bags are available for use in homes.

Overview

Color uniformity can be achieved by consistency in concrete materials, preparation of materials and curing. It is necessary to maintain a low and consistent water-cement ratio. This improves color consistency. After coloring, the surface of the concrete is sealed for moisture protection and to add a shine to enhance the colors. Most concrete colors are lime proof, lightfast and weather resistant and provide long lasting appeal. Colored concrete is commonly used in residential constructions for driveways, patios and walks. It is also used in architectural work.

Concrete blocks are used as building material in place with or along with bricks and stone. Use of concrete blocks along with cement or mortar results in stronger construction and durability. Also concrete blocks are made from reproduced material. Hence waste resources from quarries or sites are well utilized in the manufacture of concrete blocks.

Building with concrete blocks

Concrete blocks are used to construct foundations, walls, arches, and any other masonry unit. One concrete block is almost equal to four bricks. This makes construction work get done faster. These blocks are compatible with most other building materials like stone or bricks are being increasingly used in the construction of buildings. The size and weight of the concrete block will of course depend upon the machine and specifications for a particular kind of construction. Concrete contractors may use blocks of different sizes for different purposes such as houses, driveways or other constructions.

How are concrete blocks made?

Concrete blocks are made using cement, fine and coarse aggregate and very little water. Waste material from stone quarries or construction sites may also be used in some cases. Machines that bind together the above materials use high level of compaction and vibration to produce quality concrete blocks that are long lasting and durable. The technology is also cost-effective and at the same time makes maximum utilization of wastes and local available resources. Hollow concrete blocks are another concept in building technology. These come with a richer mix of materials, are lightweight and facilitate easier handling.

Features

Concrete block technology offers contractors and homeowners an alternative to conventional wall and foundation building techniques. As concrete blocks use waste resources too, they are gaining preference over traditional stone or brick walls. It is also proving to be a cost-effective business venture for many concrete contractors and building materials and construction companies. Areas where stone or bricks are not easily available and where time is also a constraint have seen a gradual increase in the use of concrete blocks in construction of many buildings and homes. Concrete block technology is one that can be used to produce material locally with available raw materials. This ensures cost-effectiveness and time-efficiency as well.

Concrete can be made to resemble tiles, stone, bricks and even wood. This kind of stamped concrete is used to beautify paths, driveways, footways, pool decks, entries and even courtyards or patios. Due to the vast choice of colors and patterns available, stamped concrete is an interesting option to be considered for exterior dcor.

Availability of options

Stamped concrete is available in a wide array of patterns and colors. The added benefit of stamped concrete is that it is a comparatively cheaper option among those available in the market for decorating the exterior of a house. Stamped concrete can be used all by itself or can blend with stone, tiles, brick or even wood. Affordable and at the same time varied, stamped concrete is slowly gaining popularity among homeowners as well as those in the concrete supply business.

How is stamped concrete laid?

Concrete must be soft when stamping tools are put to work. Planning the area of work and laying out stamps before the concrete is put on the ground is the right way to begin the work. The concrete must not be too wet or too dry as both will slow down the work of the concrete contractors. The right amount of concrete can be determined by stamped concrete contractors who can be called in earlier to get the right estimate of concrete quantity and cost involved.

Maintenance of stamped concrete

Stamped concrete will require regular maintenance as would any other part of the home. However the frequency of maintenance would depend upon where the stamped concrete has been used and how high is the traffic, whether cars or foot and the use of water or any other chemicals in that area. Regular cleaning and sealing of stamped concrete is very much essential to prevent the stamped concrete from looking dull or fading away.

Beautifying existing dcor with stamped concrete

If the exterior of the house needs any beautification, stamped concrete can do wonders. Remodel steps or courtyards or even add a fountain using this kind of concrete. Landscape designers have put stamped concrete to good use in beautifying patios and driveways as well as making pool decks more appealing and welcoming.
