Painting a Formica Countertop

Initially, clean the existing countertop with detergent and water. Eradicate any glossy spots by sanding the whole counter. The gloss from the Formica has to be cleaned with TSP. Take the necessary precautions of wearing rubber gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask. Use Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer over the surface. Let it be absolutely dry. Now the counter is ready to be painted. Any type of faux finish may be used. 3 coats of satin or high-gloss non-yellowing polyurethane are used for good results. Water based products should be used as they won’t change the colors which will be used. When water based products are used, the layers in between should not be sanded with steel wool. The tiny fibers of steel wool will break and corrode in the poly, leading to small tiny brown spots.

Painting a Laminate Countertop

Wash the countertop with TSP or Comet to dislodge any oil and gunk. Then rinse it well and allow it to dry. All the holes and cracks should be filled with Spackle. Paint the countertop with 2 coats of kilz and allow it to dry for 24 hours. Then Paint with 2 or 3 coats of Water based paint and let it dry for 24 hours. Paint with roller 2 or 3 coats of Water based polycrilic finish and again let it dry for 24 hours. Confirm that water based paint has been used as the oil based chemicals are not satisfactory for preparing food.

Instructions to apply Bonding agent and Refinisher Coating

Surface must be clean, dry and corrosion free. Caulk must be removed with a knife. Soap scum, grease, and wax by wiping a fixture with acetone. All surface area must be sanded with 80 grit sandpaper. Any rust must be removed with a wire brush. If chips, cracks and dings are present they must be repaired. Now ensure that the countertop is dry and does not contain debris. Mask plumbing fixtures and adjacent areas with masking tape and paper. Apply the entire fixture with Acetone before applying the bonding agent. After Acetone evaporates, spray a light coat of bonding agent to the entire surface. Then apply the Refinisher Paint Coating.
