Definition

Jazz Piano has been one of foundation pillars of the jazz genre in both the solo and ensemble categories of music. Jazz Piano helps in the understanding and implementing the real nature of jazz theory. Jazz category is extremely melodic, harmonic and synchronized in nature. The different sub-categories of jazz implement different kinds of jazz pianos. Many new types of jazz pianos are being experimented which cater to the dynamic nature of rhythmic attributes of jazz style.

Background and working

The formulators of Jazz Piano include some of the geniuses of modern music like Jelly Roll Morton, James Johnson, Teddy Wilson, Mary Lou Williams and Art Tatum. In the 1960's, some new faces rose to international cognizance like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett and John Taylor. Bill Evans was the mentor and path-illuminator for these new generation pianists. The latest luminaries comprise of pianists like Mulgrew Miller, Geoffrey Keezer, Danilo Perez, Marc Van Roon and many others. Also, playing a Jazz Piano requires special skill-sets. A Jazz Pianist must be able to read his notes (music notations) by a mere glance and also interpret them quickly while his fingers tickle on the keys. This happens by way of sight and memory. In a complete accompaniment while playing in an orchestra, the pianist has to balance the interpretation from the notes in accordance with the synchronization of the soloist and other instrumentalists.

Contribution of Jazz Piano

The initial contribution of Jazz Piano in ensembles was to serve as filler and a time-adjusting component. However, later it became as one of the telepathically governed ways to interact with the soloist with the help of short and sustained chordal and melodic synchronizations. The use of Jazz Piano gave the soloist innumerous alternatives to adjust his/her voice according to the changing patterns of rhythm, scale, octave, harmonics and tones. In a style called stride piano, the left hand alternates position by playing notes as well as chords. The right hand is used to play the melodic lines or the treble. Another unique feature is the use of several faux scales like Four Beat, Twelve Step and an emulation method called Shuffling.

A piano is a musical instrument in which the steel string strike with felt hammers to produce a rhythm by the vibration of the string at resonant frequency. Nowadays the piano is used more as a western music for the performance of the solo programme. This musical instrument has gained importance over the years by making it ubiquitous in nature. The piano is derived from an Italian name known as pianoforte. The traditional pianos have also the same functions as the modern piano. With the involvement of the modern piano the traditional pianos have lost its importance over the years.

Working of the traditional pianos

The musical rhythm is produced by striking the piano strings with the felt hammers and these felt hammers are present at the ends of the keys. This is done by the pressing of the keys and thus the ends strike with the string. When these vibrations are produced at resonating frequency they are transferred through the bridges. Thus the fine quality of sound is reproduced as the keys are pressed. There are two types of the pianos and these are grand and upright pianos. In the case of the grand pianos they have their frames and strings placed in the horizontal position, whereas in the case of the upright pianos the frames and the strings are placed in the vertical position. The upright pianos though they are in the vertical position they are available in many heights. The quality of the sound is measured in the scale design and does not depend on the size of the piano; as larger pianos produce a larger sound but the tuning of the pianos depend on the materials used. This also depends on some of the things that directly corresponds to the sound produced which includes touch, tone and tuning stability. Only a professional pianist can take care of the traditional pianos.

Conclusion

The traditional pianos are the ones which carry the highest magnitude in the field of music especially in the pianos. These pianos are mainly maintained by the professional pianist because it is difficult to maintain these devices by any ordinary pianist. The pianos ubiquity has made it a unique device with its fine tuning.

Piano is a musical instrument which produces sound by striking steel strings with fabric hammers. The word piano is derived from the Italian name pianoforte. During the 18th and the 19th century it was a tradition that ability to play the piano made young women more marriageable. As a result the music masters used to teach girls rather than the boys.

Early Years

At the time of its invention around 1700 the piano was a speculative invention produced by Bartolomeo Cristofori for his wealthy boss Ferdinando de Medici who was the grand prince of Florence. At that period piano was a very expensive item and was literally owned by the royals. Even later during 18th century pianos were beyond the reach of most of the families as it was generally the property of the higher society. The piano was being invented at the end of the 17th century and later became wide spread in western society by the end of the 18th century.

The Spread Of Piano

During the 19th and 20th centuries as the middle class increased in both numbers and prosperity the domestic importance of piano also increased. As a result more and more families became able to afford pianos and also take piano instructions. Thus the piano became more common in public institutions, such as schools, hotels and public houses. As elements of the western middle class lifestyle gradually spread to other nations, the piano became common in these nations as well. To know more about the rise of the piano among the middle class it is helpful to remember that the mechanical and the electronic reproduction, music was infact performed on daily basis by ordinary people. As the rising prosperity many families could now afford pianos and music adapted their home grown musical abilities and therefore piano became a major source of music in the home for every one. Now adays pianos are being bought are of higher quality and more expensive than those of several years ago. Today most parents think that piano lessons teach their children concentration and self-discipline.

Beethoven

Johann van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany during the year 1770. At his young age Beethoven took interest in music, and his father taught him day and night. His father was a musician at the court of Bonn where he was having the tavern. At the age of 7 on 26th March, Beethoven gave his first public performance at Cologne. As the musical and teaching talents were limited Beethoven started learning music very seriously form Gottlob Neefe. Then at the age of 12, Beethoven published his first work 9 variations, in c Minor for piano on March 1782. And the following year Neefe wrote in the "Magazine of Music" about his Beethoven that if he continues like this he will be no doubtly the new Mozart. At the age of 14 he was appointed as the organist of the court of Maximilian Franz, elector of cologne on the recommendation of Neefe. Prince Franz was aware of Beethoven's musical gift, so he sent Beethoven to Vienna to meet Mozart in order to get his further musical education. There at Vienna Beethoven began taking lessons form Haydn and Salieri. He captured the attention of the people of Vienna with his virtuosity and his improvisations on piano. Beethoven made numerous acquaintances at Vienna, everybody in the musical world admired the young composer. In 1800 he organized a new concert at Vienna including the presentation of his first symphony. His symphony work was classical and was close to the works of Mozart and Haydn.

Beethovens Achievements

Beethoven had written one opera named Leonore, the only opera he wrote and re-wrote in four different overtures. The name of the opera was changed to Fidelio against his wishes. He also composed many other symphonies, amongst which were the Pastrol, the Coriolan Overture and the famous Letter for Elise.

They do not require the microphones and eliminates the problem of audio feedback. They are incorporated with the musical instrument digital interface (MIDI). The sounds produced are polyphonic sounds and a natural reverberation lacks in this instrument. The digital pianos include amplifiers and loudspeakers. Digital piano has a keyboard control and consists of default sounds. These electronic devices have a higher grip over the acoustic devices. A lot of companies are involved in making such devices. In 1980 they got connected with via MIDI and switched over to the functions like software synthesis. And in 2000 CEMI (computer generated musical instruments) was generated. Well ePiano can be given an example of the CEMI. A lot of expensive and high quality samples are stored in piano.

Conclusion

Digital pianos proved to be very efficient and it is found useful among the entire person those who are interested in music. The inexpensiveness of the digital pianos allured a lot of people towards itself. The electronic devices have become cheap over the years and these have been success in all the devices.

There is nothing that fills one's heart like music. Music sooths, excites, alters one's mood, tickles one's heart and stirs up emotions in the innermost realms of human existence. With its characteristic features it resonates very well with the notion of romance. Piano music has that unequivocal capacity to bring out the most subtle to the most raw of emotions compatible to that of a deep romantic relationship. Needless to say then the deep connection between piano and romance are as old as the origin of the instrument itself. Let us explore some of the nuances of this relationship.

Romance:

This term is used mainly to denote the courtship escapades of a budding love relationship. But this term has a long history. The narrative ballads of Spain were called romance/romanza. The 18th century simple lyrical pieces for voice and for instruments were known as romance. Then the 19th century Russian sentimental art song was also called 'romance'. The medieval renaissance of art, literature, music and architecture- everything is came to be known as that of romantic period. Of all these, the piano and the piano music generated romance in its multifarious aspects -in its epistemological, existential, technical etc.

Piano Romance:

For the second movement of his piano concerto no. 20 in D minor Mozart gave the subtitle "Romance". It is the first of piano instrumental romances. He includes a romanze and Rondo in his Horn Concerto. Robert Schumann liked the title "Romance" for lyrical piano pieces. Antonio Dvk and Clara Schumann include the term Romance to their violin and piano music album. Greeting cards come with exquisite images of a red rose laid on the keyboard of a grand piano or on musical notation for piano. There any number of short stories, novels, movies centered on a piano. New age music is the most romantic of all. Its quality of seeping into the heart without bothering the head much about the classical categorizations puts it closer to the notion of romance than anything else. The inner moods are expressed in the swaying of the keys of the piano that penetrate the untouched nooks of the heart and transports one to the levels of exhilaration equal to mystical experiences. The romance happens, then with the human and the divine.

The introduction of the new changes gave rise to the technological changes in the instrument. The innovations created a lot of importance among the people. With the industrial revolution this was in the hands of many people to play the instruments which had technological changes.

Innovations

The technological changes was brought was in the year 1880. And the innovations were made by industrial revolution and after this a drastic change was considered in the piano mechanical systems. Previously small pianos were manufactured and in the course of time with the technological changes a great change was noticed. An even digital change was incorporated in the piano and it was for the purpose of the mechanical and acoustic device. Sebastien Erard invented in 1808 the agraffes. Gradually a lot of changes made to the invention of the digital piano and before the invention of the digital ones the modern pianos was developed and the modern ones was divided into two which were grand and upright pianos. The grand pianos are the instruments in which the frames and the strings are placed horizontally. And in the upright pianos the frames and the strings are placed vertically. They both are large and a bit bulkier. The innovations made in this gave rise to the digital ones in 1980, which allured a lot of people for the musical instruments and made it easier to learn and some didn't even require the coaching for learning and thus they can carry this by themselves.

Conclusion

With the concatenation of the innovations this gave rise to lot of technological changes and made the creation of the popularity to correspond with innovations. As this became popular it made a rise in the digital devices. The kids came abreast with those changes as they learned them easily within few months.

The 'New Age' and Music:

The term new age refers to a movement of religio-cultural aspects of societies from orthodoxy and conformism to a more liberal and individual oriented approach. Piano music too has undergone that transformation. The traditional way of playing piano is still considered to be prestigious and elitist, there are individuals who have broken with tradition and have established a new identity for their own way of creating music. They have built their own 'brand' of piano music so to say. They are called the new age pianists. Their music does not have vocals, but mostly it is instrumental. New age music, whether it is piano or any other music it is mainly used for relaxation, meditation, yoga, reiki and the like. The new age pianist defies traditional rules of playing piano and creates his/her own rules for himself or herself. S/he will not want to impose that way of playing onto others. If others are inspired to go in that is fine.

Some New Age Pianists:

Shannon Janssen's compositions especially the album Piano Paintings is an excellent example. It is a delicate swaying of light melodies that paint a musical landscape which is played with imagination and grace. This music set a new trend/genre for many aspiring musicians. The style in her original compositions stirs soft emotions and settles them in deep comfort. It is the heart that generates music through her hand which transports one to the divine realms. Richard Carr is another artist who composes soulful music with thoughtfulness and spirit. This personal art form gets an enhancement from the synthetic additions to the piano track. "At Heaven's Edge" integrates piano with lots of other keyboard fillings. For those who are frustrated and worried this music is a spiritual food and medicine to sooth the soul. Philip Aaberg is a 'born pianist' who has his own label of music, the 'Sweetgrass Music'. High Plains, The Shape of The Land, Morning Walk are few examples of his compositions. Giovanni, Kurt Bestor, Dan Mahoney and Martin Mayer are some of the new age pianists.

New Age Piano Music and the Contemporary world:

Today's world is on a fast track. Everyone is busy. No one has time for oneself or for others. Piano music that emerges out of the emotions that are born in the artist's heart are often the reflection or the response to the contemporary mood. This helps one to stop for a while and take stock of one's life, direction and purpose.

Introduction

A piano is a musical instrument with a manual keyboard actuating hammers that strike wire strings producing sounds that may be softened by means of pedals. The piano is generally used in the western music for solo performances and is among the most regular of musical instruments. The word piano comes from the Italian name pianoforte which means soft. Piano was invented in the year 1700, by one of the Italian named Bartholomew Christopher. Piano is a very problematical instrument with 2500 parts which includes keys, hammers and mechanism.

Ancient Era

In the 19th century it was a tradition that the proud owner of the piano was greeted in a very warm welcome. When the piano was purchased there used to be a procession where the local clergyman would say some prayers and bless the instrument as well as the craftsmen. Also the Mayor would deliver an address and the Schoolmaster, doctor and other dignitaries would give speeches. And in the end when the piano was in its new house all the people would enjoy a banquet and celebrate the occasion. Regrettably these days this tradition does not exist, such purchases are taken for granted.

Three Hundredth Anniversary

As the piano was invented in the year 1700, the year 2000 marks the three hundredth anniversary of pianos invention. On this occasion an exhibition was organized by the national Museum Of American History at the International Gallery, which was open from 9th of March to the 21st of October. PIANO 300 was the name given to that special exhibition of pianos. PIANO 300 explores the piano as a complex machine, a handsome work of decorative art and the vehicle for a infinite variety of human expression reflecting technological, cultural and social changes. One of the earliest pianos invented by Bartholomew Christopher was also there in that exhibition. A stunning square grand piano and a tiny black baby grand piano edged in gold were the favorites in that exhibition. Even the unusual giraffe upright piano also looked interesting among the other pianos. Miniature pianos, T-shirts, assorted books and music were been sold in the gift shop.

Voicing

Sound of the Piano can be described as 'glassy' or 'warm', because piano has its own unique sound. One might have a full singing tone and other may sound thin. Although the original design establishes the basic character of the Piano's tone it can be modified to suit the taste of the pianist or to restore its original tone. The process of modifying a Piano's tone is called voicing. Piano voicing consists in giving the piano a nice sound depends on the pianist or the listener.

Reasons Of Voicing

There are different reasons for voicing the Piano like if the tone varies radically from note to note, if the piano sounds different from the time it was purchased, it has lost its ability to play softly, if the range of tone cannot be achieved at different volumes etc. Before deciding if a piano needs voicing it is important to make sure that it is well tuned and well regulated. Most voicing procedures are long lasting so sometimes it is necessary to explore the sound of the instrument before deciding to change it. Sometimes voicing is needed depends upon the piano's usage and its attended audience. Pianos at the recording or concert halls often need minor refinement of voicing before each performance. Once in every five years a home piano needs initial voicing to customize it to the owners taste.

Piano is the general name given to a musical instrument classified as a keyboard, percussion, or string instrument. The piano is widely used in western music for solo performance, chamber music and accompaniment. It is also popular as an aid to composing and rehearsals. Pianos are not portable and often expensive, the piano's versatility and uniquity has made most famous of musical instruments.

The piano technician guide (PTG), is the official organization of the Registered Piano Technician (RPT). It is considered the preeminent source of expertise in piano technology and service. However, the title of RTG must be earned by passing a serious of rigorous examination.

RPT Examination:

Written – The written exam test basic knowledge of piano design, tuning theory, repair and general technology, generally considered the easiest portion of overall examination.

Tuning Exam- the tuning exam tests the individual's ability to tune a piano. The examinee subsequently tunes the piano, and his tuning is measured against the "master tuning" using sensitive electronic measuring equipment.

Technical Exam-It involves two parts: regulation of two piano action models (grand and upright) and a repair test. The examinee must show proficiency at several basic in home repairs, such as fixing broken string, replacing hammer shanks, repairing flange bushings, reshaping hammers, and replacing key bushings.

Care by technician:

Tuning- the pianos should be tuned regularly, roughly once every four to six months for domestic pianos, and always just before a performance in concert house. If the piano is left out of tune, the more time and efforts technician will need to restore it to pitch.

Voicing- the felt hammers of the piano tend to harden over time also forms grooves at the points of contacts with the strings. Thus, piano technician can soften hammers using special tools called voicing, it includes filing the hammers, restoring their original ovoid shape and pristine surface at the expense of making them somewhat smaller.

Regulation- over a time the performance of a piano action tends to decline, due to the compression of felt, wrapping of wood and other types of wear. A skilled technician can restore it to optimal precision, in a process called regulation, which involves adjustments ranging from tuning a small screw to sanding down a wood surface.

Introduction

The piano is mostly used in the western music for solo performances and is more familiar of musical instruments. The word piano is derived from the Italian name pianoforte. It was invented by the Italian named Bartolomeo Cristofori in the year 1700.

Soundboard

The soundboard consists of a sheet of wood; One thickness spruce and Special taper. It is a part of a musical instrument used to produce a sound. It is part of a string that transmits the vibration of the strings greatly increasing the loudness of sound over that of the string alone. Soundboards are made of wood though other materials have skin or plastic on instruments. Plate or belly are some of the unique sound boards. In a Grand piano the soundboard is a large horizontal plate at the bottom and in the Upright Piano the soundboard is a large vertical plate at the bottom.

Sound Board Of Piano

In the piano the function of the soundboard is to take up and repeat the vibratory motions of the strings. More than two hundred strings that constitute the tone generating element of the piano are stretched at high tensions over wooden bridges which are rigidly fastened to the surface of the soundboard. Within a small fraction of a second any motions of the strings are transmitted through the bridges to the sound board, which as it were, accepts them and faithfully reproduces them over its entire surface. These tiny complex motions originating at the strings are transmitted to the large body of air surrounding the front and back surface of the soundboard. The soundboard of the piano acts just as the parchment head of a drum or the thin sheet diaphragm of the receiver element in a telephone. In order to obtain these very remarkable effects of amplification, the soundboard of the piano must be constructed with exquisite skill. The pieces of spruce wood from which it is made are matched in such a way that the grain runs roughly parallel to the line of the great bridges upon which the strings rest.

Piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua in Italy. The pianos come in different types and especially they are western music and are used for the solo performance.

Types

The modern pianos come in two basic configurations and they are the grand piano and the upright piano. But there are also other types of pianos which were discovered by many persons. The grand pianos and the upright pianos can be distinguished easily. In the former the frame and strings are placed horizontally where as in the latter they are placed vertically. The grand pianos are very bulky and take a lot of space. But the upright pianos are less bulky and take less space in comparison to grand pianos. They produce fine music creating nice rhythm. However the invention of the digital pianos led in 1980. In this digital sampling technology is used for the reproduction of the sound of each piano note. They are very sophisticated and have modern technology. They include working pedals, weighted keys, multiple voices and MIDI. Even silence pianos whose significance is to silence the piano and convert into a digital instrument which makes a great popularity for this instrument. These different types of pianos have different significance and they come in lots of varieties and accordingly the rates are decided. Nowadays the digital pianos have gained a lot of popularity.

Conclusion

Interest in the field of music creates a different type of popularity and the fine tuning of the piano allures the crowd to learn this and influences them greatly. The piano is the musical instruments that is played by the persons royal in nature and have artist nature hidden inside them. The modern pianos have taken thick skin over the latest modern technology pianos.

Piano is a musical instrument in which sound is produced by striking steel strings with felt hammers that immediately rebound producing a vibration at the resonant frequency. The role of piano is to provide accompaniment in solo performance, chamber music, orchestra and other forms. The earliest piano is said to have been fabricated by an Italian named Bartolomeo Cristofori. The underlying mechanism was that of clavichord and harpsichord. The hammers were supposed to strike the string but not remain in contact with it so as not to damp the vibrations. The hammers were also required to return to their rest position smoothly.

Functional importance of Piano

The piano is an important instrument in the western music. Since, a piano is equipped with complex and different tools of melodic and harmonic sounds, it helps facilitating of the composition of music in a significant manner. In 1872, duplexes or aliquot scales emerged. It comprised of controlling different components of vibration by tuning their secondary parts in octave relationships. This helped in more distinct undamped vibrations and thus helped to modify tones. In the early 19th century some structural changes took place which led to a more powerful, harmonious and sustained piano sound. High quality steel and accurate casting techniques for iron frame manufacture were getting innovated in that era following the Industrial Revolution.

Piano as backbone of music

Earlier, the innovation of piano was simply an outcome of the musical curiosity, exploring the undiscovered realms of music. However, later it became as one of the telepathically governed ways to interact with the soloist with the help of short and sustained chordal and melodic synchronizations. Piano gave the soloist capabilities to adjust his/her voice according to the changing patterns of rhythm, scale, octave, harmonics and tones. Since the musical range of piano could ride the waves of ever changing attributes in music, thus this instrument became the backbone in musical composing, rehearsing and orchestral accompaniment. Although piano being non-portable and expensive, yet its versatility and dynamically re-adjustable character made it the most powerful instruments in composing.

While a classical pianist starts practicing from a very early age, jazz pianist deals with the jazz theory of music. The piano soloists find their importance everywhere because of the flexibility to perform alone as well as in accompaniment with an orchestra.

Piano soloist

Since a pianist is made up to perform in different types of configurations, he should be technically and mentally sound to be able to adjust musically either performing alone or in conjunction with other instrumentalists. The underlying factors include attributes like chords, scale, pitch, rhythm, tone, harmonics and synchronization. A piano soloist tends to impart a stylish touch to the art of music through personalization and customization of heart felt vibrations.

Renowned piano soloists

Alexander Tutunov has been one of the greatest recitalist and orchestral soloist of the former Soviet Union. Born in Belarus, he had his early schooling in Moscow where he did diplomas in concert performance. Alexander Tutunov has to his credit long list of honors and prizes. He was awarded honors from the Minsk Musical College in Belarus, University of North Texas and the Belarusian National Academy of Music. He was also awarded the highest post graduate degree in concert performance from the Belarusian State Conservatory in Minsk. He was also the winner of First Prize of the Belarusian National Piano Competition and the Russian National Piano Competition. Alexander Tutunov is currently director of keyboard studies at South Oregon University and has taught at the Minsk College of Music, the University of North Texas and Illinois Wesleyan University. Other acclaimed piano soloists include Lee Luvisi who is renowned for the Piano Concerto No. 22 played in E flat. He swarmed the audiences' hearts by his dynamic and intelligent musical aptitude. He laid great stress on the phrases' structures and imparted a colorful tone to the triplets in the compositions. Dana Nigrim, Angelin Chang, Olivier Messiaen were some of the other internationally acclaimed pianists who added honor to the class of solo pianists in different capacities.

Piano and Strings:

An acoustic piano makes melody by the striking of tuned strings by pressurized woolen hammer. The tone depends on the quality of the strings, their condition at a given moment- well tuned, out of tune, rust, damage, breakage etc. A grand piano has 88 keys. The frequency ranges from 27.5 Hz (the A0 key) to 4186 Hz (C8 key). The strings are held in a caste iron frame and they pass over a bridge with notches to a pin block. Pin blocks are the mechanism by which the strings are tuned. Strings are the nerve center of the piano. Let us look into certain aspects of the strings in a piano.

Some Characteristics of Piano Strings:

The number of strings in a grand piano is 230 for the 88 keys. For the ten low pitches single wire-wound strings are used. The next 18 pitches are generated by means of double strings. The 60 high pitches have three strings each. Providing the required tension in all these strings is a gigantic task. The total tension tuned in a grand piano is approximately 30 tons. In order to constrain the frequencies to their proper values the string mass is varied with the varying pitches. The steel wire is wound with copper or brass for lowering the pitch. The winding of wire adds heaviness to the string without producing excessive stiffness. One equal tempered semitone is 100 cents more than the previous semitone. Because of the stiffness of the lower strings they fail to produce exact harmonics necessary to grade them as ideal strings. The upper notes are tuned more in harmony with the midrange notes than the lower range notes. The lower pitch notes are tuned 30 cents flat and the upper end notes are tuned up to 30 cents sharp. The piano strings transfer the sound energy into the soundboard which amplifies and gives out the regal tone. The coupling of the string energy with the sound board is the most technical of the techniques. The sound has to be loud and sustained.

Replacing Strings:

Piano strings are usually made to order as per the acoustic requirements of the given piano. There are universal strings with hexagonal steel core and a copper winding. These are good for emergency fittings. Replacing old or broken strings is a tricky matter as the new string may not go well with the dull sound of the old strings.
