The Basics of a Lawn Sprinkler:

Attach the hose to a connector on the right-hand side. There is often a knob that allows the adjustment of the spray pattern (full, center, left or right).A small arm is connected to the knob that gets pushed and pulled by a heart-shaped cam. When the sprinkler is working, the cam rotates slowly, at a rough speed of 1 revolution per minute (rpm) – this is what causes the arm to oscillate back and forward. The spray arm is a hollow aluminum tube with holes in it while on some sprinklers there are nozzles on this tube. The spray arm also has a ferrule and an O-ring seal on it and it screws into the body of the sprinkler. A lawn sprinkler is an incredibly simple device at the core. Water flows into the spray arm or the aluminum tube and it sprays out through the holes or the nozzles. The cam pushes the spray arm back and forward. It has a heart-shaped cam instead of a simple little crankshaft because a circular crankshaft would cause both ends of the spray pattern to get a lot more water than the center of the spray pattern

Spinning the Cam of the Lawn Sprinkler:

One way of rotating the cam would be to use a small electric motor. But for that you would need to replace the batteries repeatedly. You have a built-in power source: the running water that flows right through the sprinkler. You might as well use it in the same way that a hydro-electric dam uses water to spin its turbines. If you cut open the body of the sprinkler there is a small turbine or water wheel. If you look down the tube where the hose is attached, there is a small restrictor that allows some water to flow straight ahead and forces some water to shoot to the left. The water shooting to the left spins the turbine. The gear train provides a reduction in speed so the cam spins at about 1 rpm.

1. The automatic timer of a sprinkler has a clock that controls when and how long to water an area of the lawn. And similar to most other clocks it runs off of electricity. If you face trouble with the timer, check to see if it’s plugged in properly or if the circuit is getting power. 4. If water is running continuously then first check the automatic timer to see if it is programmed to do that. If it is not, then there may be a serious problem. 5. Most sprinkler heads are adjustable, and after reuse they may get knocked off their intended target. Check the sprinkler manual to find out how to adjust the head properly. When the temperature starts dropping, winterize the system. This involves draining or blowing out all the water from the pipes and shutting off the timer so it does not accidentally activate during the winter. Many system installers provide winterizing services and some systems are designed so you can conveniently winterize it on your own. Consult the system manual to see which option works best.

1. Locate where the leak is. This might need a little bit of digging because some times where the water is coming out of the ground is not the source of the leak. Once the leak has been located, turn off the water to that area. Ensure that you have correct diameter repair pipe and couplers. PVC pipes have information about size and test-strength printed up and down the sides.

2. Dig some work space around and under the break because some movement in the PVC is required in order to achieve a tight fit with the repair. Clean out water, mud and dirt as much as possible. Measure approximately 4″ to 6″ from the crack on each side and cut with a PVC cutter.

3. Use purple primer and the brush and prime both of the clean sprinkler pipes ends approximately 1″ below from lip of pipe end, and the inner areas of two straight couplers. Apply glue to one end of the pipe and half of a straight coupler. Twist coupler onto the pipe, and let the pipe end butt up against the “stop” in the center of the coupler. Repeat the same for the other pipe end.

4. Cut a piece of repair pipe to fit the cut made in the sprinkler line, including the 1/2″ or more of each straight coupler. Use a tape measure to achieve correct length from the middle of each straight coupler. If a tape measure is not available then lay a piece of pipe down into the trench and mark with a pen or pencil for the cut.

5. Fit the cut piece into the dry couplers to be sure that the fit is correct and that the resulting pipe is not bowed from the replacement piece being too long.

6. Disassemble and make any necessary adjustments until the perfect fit is achieved. Primer both ends of the cut piece and apply a light layer of glue to one end of the replacement piece and inside one of the straight couplers. Twist pipe into coupler until it stops. Allow it to dry and then apply glue to the remaining pipe-end and coupler. Allow all fittings and joints to dry completely before turning on water in that line.

Irrigation helps take care of one of these needs by providing water. The more refined methods of irrigation in use today are:
1. Surface irrigation such as border irrigation, furrow irrigation and other forms of irrigation that use flooding
2. Overhead irrigation
3. Trickle or drip irrigation
4. Sub-surface irrigation and plastic mulch

1. Surface Irrigation:
Surface irrigation is the least complex form of irrigation. No attempt is made to stop fields from naturally flooding and this is only suitable in situations where the crop is of little value, or where the field will be used only for grazing or even recreation. This method is totally dependent upon a suitable water source. In border irrigation the field is not entirely enclosed by a dyke but it is watered from one end and allowed to drain from the other.

2. Overhead Irrigation:
An overhead irrigation system is like a lawn sprinkler, the basic principle is that water is pumped in under pressure and sprayed onto the plants from flat spray nozzles. Overhead systems are particularly useful in covering large areas of land, and some can even be dismantled and moved from field to field with little trouble. Overhead irrigation systems need a plentiful supply of water at a relatively high pressure and they vary greatly in complexity and cost.

3. Trickle or Drip Irrigation:
While surface irrigation methods water the whole surface of the field and overhead irrigation leaves the plants wet, drip irrigation is far more controlled. Water is slowly provided to a specific area, close to the roots of the plant, by a network of drip emitters. Drip irrigation provides water near the base of the plant and leaves the upper foliage dry and less susceptible to fungi. The advantage of using trickle or drip irrigation is control. This method of irrigation is precise and economical.

4. Sub-Surface Irrigation:
Though initially expensive and not suitable for many areas, the economical advantages of drip irrigation can be further increased by placing the irrigation tubing about 5 inches below the surface where the water gets straight to where it’s needed – the roots of the plant. Evaporation is reduced to a great extent and there is no opportunity for surface runoff. A plastic mulch is a protective covering of organic material placed around plants to reduce evaporation, prevent the growth of weeds, help protect the roots from frost damage and help to keep fruit off the ground.

Installation Requirements
1. The valve must be installed at least 6″ above the highest sprinkler it controls, or according to local codes.
2. No additional valves other than drain valves should be connected between the valve and the sprinklers.
3. The valve outlet must not be subject to backpressure at any time.
4. The valve must be installed in an accessible outdoor area in a vertical and level position.
5. The valve must not operate continuously for more than 12 hours.
6. Always check local codes for specific regulations regarding the installation of under-ground sprinkler systems.

Specifications for fitting a sprinkler valve:
1. A pressure regulator must be installed upstream of the valve if the static water pressure exceeds 80 PSI.
2. Installing a manual shut-off valve between the water source and the sprinkler valves is recommended. This will enable the sprinkler system to be easily serviced and/ or drained for winterization without interrupting the household water supply.
3. Use only Teflon tapes on threaded valve connections.
4. Flush water supply line thoroughly before installing the valves. Sand and dirt in the line can damage the valve and prevent the valve from operating properly.
5. If installing two or more valves together provide a minimum clearance of 4″ between valves to enable removal or tightening of valve if necessary.
6. After allowing pipe cement to secure thoroughly, apply water pressure to valves and check for leaks at all fittings.
7. To manually test valve operation, turn the solenoid slowly by hand counterclockwise 1/2turn. The valve should open within 5 seconds. To close the valve, turn the solenoid clockwise until snug.
8. To reset to a higher flow rate, turn the flow control counterclockwise.
9. Select a cable with at least one wire for each valve plus one wire to serve as a return common for all valves.
10. For future expansion of the sprinkler system, use a cable with extra wires to accommodate additional valves.
