Garden Sickles
A garden sickle is the perfect addition to the range of tools that you should have around your house. There are a number of other tools that you might include in your tool box. These could include wrenches, screwdrivers, drilling machines and other such items. These items have their own purposes and functions. However in spite of all these additions in your tool box, the garden sickle must be an integral part of your tool kit.
Description and variety of the Sickle
A sickle by definition is a curved metal blade that has a wooden handle. The handle is used to chop off grass and weeds. However the definition does not provide justice to the use and effectiveness of this unique tool. This tool is ergonomically designed. There are many variations to this very simple tool. For example the length of the curved blade could vary from sickle to sickle. For use on entire farms and fields, this blade is of a larger size, whereas for use in private backyards, and gardens, the length and thickness of the sickle is much smaller.
The main purpose of the sickle is to uproot weeds and unwanted grass. Thus it is designed in such a way that it first cuts through the grass or weeds swiftly and then entangles itself among the weed and pulls it out entirely from the ground. The varieties that are included among the different sickles are the English Fenland, Victorian Style, Potato reaper, John Riley reaping hook, and Silage knife. Although the basic designs of all these different sickles are the same, the angles of the blades differ from one another. Also the length of the handle on these sickle differ. This little addition makes a big difference to the convenience of the use of the sickle. A short handle is very easy to maneuver, whereas a long handle is usually cumbersome to work with and puts undue pressure on the person working with it.
Thus the sickle is one of the best inventions that have made our gardening work much easier. It would be very difficult to imagine our gardening work without the use of a sickle.
