Kitchen countertops
Countertop means the horizontal work surface in kitchens. When they are installed they are 25.5 inches from front to back and have an integrated backsplash to avoid spilled liquids from falling behind the cabinets. The various types of Kitchen countertops are mentioned below.
Granite Countertops, Engineered Stone, Solid Surface
Granite Countertops come in beautiful colors, look permanent and substantial and hold up the heat. But they are very expensive and require lots of maintenance. They require periodic sealing, absorb stains and may crack. Engineered Stone is made up of quartz particles. It comes in more colors than granite and its nonporous surface resists scratches. Its maintenance is very easy and annual sealing required by natural stone is not required. It is resistant to stain and acids but very exorbitant. Solid Surface Counters are available in a rainbow of colors and patterns. They are seamless and resistant to stains. But hot pans and stains, which may damage the surface, may affect them. They are moderately priced.
Ceramic Tile, Laminates, Wood
Ceramic Tile Countertops are easy to clean and can resist hot pans. It has a wide range of price, color, texture and design. But the counter surface in uneven. The tiles may easily chip or crack. The grout lines may be stained. Laminates countertops are made of plastic-coated synthetics that have a smooth surface. These are available in many colors, are easy to maintain, durable and inexpensive. If they develop scratches and chips it is impossible to repair them. The end finishing and front edge choices can be expensive. Wood countertops are made from maple or oak. They are easy to clean, smooth and may be sanded or resealed. Water and stains can spoil them with time. The scratches have to be oiled or sealed as per the manufacturer's guidelines.
Stainless Steel, Soapstone, Marble
The Stainless Steel countertops are heat resistant and durable. As they are manufactured as per the specifications, a seamless countertop can be manufactured. It can resist the ill effect of hot pans and are easy to clean. But they are quite expensive, produce noise and may dent. Soapstone countertops are generally dark gray in color and have a smooth feel. They are stain resistant to a particular degree. They require constant maintenance with mineral oil and can crack and darken with time. Marble Countertops are waterproof, heatproof and have an aesthetic look. But they are very expensive, porous, can be scratched easily, stain easily and may require periodic resealing.
