Piano Restoration And Rebuilding
Introduction
A piano is a musical instrument with a manual keyboard actuating hammers that strikes wire strings producing sounds that may be softened by means of pedals. Piano is the most important instrument among all the other musical instruments for its wide spread social influence. Piano has about 2500 parts which are so complicated such as Keys, Hammers and Mechanism. Piano was established in the year 1700 in Florence by an Italian named Bartholomew Christopher. The word piano is derived from the Italian name called pianoforte which means soft and hard.
Restoration
Pianos which loose their original beautiful tone and finish can be brought back sounding and looking much finer than they were constructed. Beautiful refinishing on the cabinets is a part of restoration. The piano is a very complicated musical instrument and can be separated into different aspects such as Action Mechanism, Keyboard, Pedal System, Soundboard, Bridges, Strings, Pin block, Harp and Cabinet.
Aspects For Restoration
The Action is a complicated mechanism made from wood, metals, leather and felt. Its function is to take the energy of the key when depressed by the player into vibrations in the strings. The Action must be in complete harmonization in order to achieve satisfying results in playing the delicate expressions in music. The Soundboard requires a special attention when goes into restoration may be it is refinishing the original Soundboard or replacing it with a new Sitka spruce board. The Bridges function is primary as to transmit the sound of the Strings to the Soundboard which is the amplifier. Nickel plated tuning pins which is rust resistant as well as beautiful are used in the stringing process. A Pin block is a very crucial part of the piano it holds the tuning pins tight. The cast iron Harp or a Frame is meticulously refinished which in the restoration industry is called reguilding. The appearance of the piano is important to every one and that lies in the quality refinishing of the pianos Cabinet. Whether it is a hand rubbed lacquer satin finish or a high gloss finish the skilled artisans focus mainly on the cabinets and bring back to life the appearance of the piano.
