Technology has caught up with man's best friend also. In our relentless quest for doing things better, man has found a new way of containment of his best friend. The radio dog fence is a method of tracking and controlling the movement of your pet even when you are not around to monitor him.

How does the radio fence work

There are two parts to an electric dog fence: a wire that is buried along the perimeter of the defined boundary area and a pet-collar with a receiver. A battery operated radio device connects the movement of the dog with the geography defined.

The signal is transmitted through the wire along the boundary to the receiver on the collar every time the dog approaches of tries to cross the set boundary. The maximum distance across which the signal can be set is a about 15 feet. Normally, it is 4-7 feet distance that is used for training the dogs. The moment the dog is near to the wire, the receiver sounds an alarm beep. Should the dog continue on his path, and try to cross the boundary earmarked, i.e. the wire, he gets a small or a mild corrective electric shock. This electric shock is a very mild one, but it still gives the hint to the pet.

This system is a good way to train your dog, remotely. Over a period of use, the pet automatically understands the boundary limits and with or without the collar, it will not cross the boundary, once trained. The area that this device covers is about 2 acres.

Radio dog fences are freely available in most pet shops in the neighborhood or one may also get these online. Apart from dogs, these can also be used to train other pets as cats. Most manufacturers offer two basic types of radio dog fences. The basic type, which may be used for dogs that are 5 pounds or more and are not so stubborn in nature. Then there are radio dog fences also, for those hard nuts to crack. The stubborn dogs can also be handled by another version of the radio dog fence. There are 5 levels of adjustable correction levels in any type of radio fence. These can be adjusted to match the response of the dog., with level 1 representing a lower correction and level 5 , the higher.

Advantages of Radio dog fences
1) If keeping your pets from straying is the main reason for you to have a fence, even though it might block the view, the radio dog fence is an excellent option.
2) Since there is no fencing that will come up, you need not worry about zoning laws and regulations that come into effect while dealing with physical fences.

Disadvantages of radio fences
1) The radio fence will definitely keep your pets in check, but it won't stop intruders from coming inside your area.
2) Radio fences are not foolproof, that means the dog might still choose to ignore the mild shock and run away, if the incentive to escape is stronger.

All said and done, the radio fence still serves its purpose of remote control on the pet and is widely used.
