Hawaiian Tikis
Hawaiian Tikis are spiritual figures who use their big, scary mouths and menacing expressions to frighten away evil. Their headdresses vary and have different meanings according to the shape. Each god assumed many different roles. For each role, they were perceived as particular and distinct gods, and had an epithet or specific name associated with each particular function. For example, the god Ku was Kuulakai or Ku of the sea's abundance when he was the god of fishing. As the god of war he was Kukailimoku of Ku the snatcher of land. There were hundreds of Tiki themed bars in America through the 50's and 60's, most of which had completely vanished by the mid 70's. Most Tiki bars had their own logo on Tiki mugs, matchbooks and more so look out for vintage tike stuff at flea markets and thrift stores.
Conclusion
Tiki style may have hit its hey-day in the '70s but now its popularity is on the rise again. For an authentic Polynesian feel right in your own backyard, you can order Tiki huts and Tiki bars online and have they shipped right to your door. Tiki huts are characterized by a wood or bamboo frame and side panels, and thatched roof. Because they originated in tropical climates, Tiki huts are designed to withstand heavy rains and wind. In the heat of summer, the thatch also provides shade several degrees cooler than canvas shade. Tiki huts are used on decks, patios or poolside, and large Tiki styles work as bars, seating areas, or spa covers. Some kits even come with electrical receptacles, fans, bar sinks, and lights, and can be assembled yourself.
