Maintaining a lush healthy garden is not easy with challenges like weeds, pests, pruning and soil quality that a gardener has to face. Depending upon the region where you live and how arid the climate might be, it can take lots of water. The best of gardeners can have difficulty in proper watering. Signs of a troubled yard are wet soil, too dry soil or not evenly irrigated soil. As a result plants and turf become brown and brittle or yellow and soggy. Water conservation has become increasingly important due to droughts and water shortages have changed landscaping because drought-resistant landscape materials that reduce the demand for water anchor more and more gardens.

Earlier, most watering systems consisted of a simple garden hose connected to a faucet. Hand-watering was a slow and labor-intensive practice and thus, water disbursement devices or sprinklers made appearance in the market. This method although has made the job easier for the homeowner has a defect which sometimes results in over watering. Another drawback of this system is that in order to be effective, the sprinkler must be moved frequently.

Not all sprinkler systems are created the same. For an underground sprinkling-system the best bet would be to start with a good diagram or plan. The plan should cover what is to be watered including trees, shrubs and turf and outline where existing sources of water are located. A professional landscape designer, a landscape contractor or a nursery specialist can help to select the right irrigation system for you. If you would want to design and build the system yourself you can consult your local library or bookstore to end up with a first-rate job on all the information you'll need.

The underground sprinkler system has evolved from iron pipe that rusts easily to lightweight plastic that will last almost forever. The inefficient and clumsy sprinkler heads of yesteryears have been replaced by finely engineered models that are the pinnacles of efficiency. They are even hidden in the ground that solves the problem of tripping over them or cutting them off with the blade of your lawn mower.

Automatic timers that control watering time are a must for an underground sprinkler system. They regulate the duration and number of times that a particular area of your yard is to be watered on a given day or in a given week. Some advanced models even have multiple programs that allow seasonal adjustment or varied watering times throughout the day or week.

Water is a costly and a precious resource and therefore a good irrigation system is an investment. Don't be thrifty when it comes to the design and material used to create your system because spending a bit more will pay dividends in water savings and a healthy garden over time.
