Wood deck Hardware-Learning the hard "ware"!
While a building a home, each individual prefers to use only a specific kind of material for his home. These preferences can be based on the individual's tastes, on the location of his home and the geographical conditions of that place or any other reason. While building wood decks too the particular hardware used is also according to the requirements of the individual and of the wood deck.
What is the hardware used?
While building wooden decks, the hardware has the following components:
1) Wood deck hardware comes with rubber bushings.
2) It comes with washers.
3) It also comes with nuts and bolts.
4) Wood deck hardware also consists of composite wood deck screws.
5) It also consists of deck fastening materials.
6) It consists of versatile hinges with 4-point stops.
7) It consists of glider bracket hardware.
There are also some bracket kits in the hardware required for building wooden decks.
9) The hardware also consists of deck screws and stainless steel screws.
10) The other form of hardware for wooden decks is 2-way nickel plated face frame hinges. They have the advantage of being fully concealed hinges.
11) Wood deck hardware also includes brass knobs, Victorian knobs, wooden knobs etc.
12) Manufacturers of wood deck fasteners and hardware have suggested a minimum Hot-Dip Galvanized requirements for use with treated wood should conform to the ASTM Standards.
13) There can also be additional products (other than stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized) which are suitable for use with ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) pressure-treated wood.
14) When ACQ pressure-treated wood is used for interior applications where there are continuous dry conditions and where the wood in service will remain below 19% equilibrium moisture content, the performance of fasteners, hardware and other metal products in contact with the treated wood should be similar to that experienced with untreated wood.
15) Fasteners for pressure-preservative treated wood must be of hot-dipped galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze or copper with the exception of one-half inch (12.7mm) diameter or greater steel bolts.
Conclusion:
It is vital that only good quality hardware is used for building wood decks to stand the test of time and the elements. Low quality materials would deteriorate very quickly which could have severe effects on the deck too. Thus the hardware used in the wooden decks must be of the best quality.
